‘Redemption Song’ like many of Marley’s compositions is more about emotion, understanding, and the message. While the notes portrayed in the painting are exactly the notes played in the song I chose not to paint every note as they repeated and I did not write every lyric. Instead I chose the notes, the timing, and the words that translated the song best visually. So that when you view the painting you do not see the minutia of detail that might otherwise obscure the very delicate message being sent. I think that this is keeping with the improvisational aspects of Reggae where each performance may differ, because Reggae is never static – it is a music that is always alive and changing.

Translation of Braille in Painting:
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Won't you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom? -
cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs -
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.
